U.S. President Donald Trump is using a decades-old trade law to keep tariffs on countries around the world — but now a federal court is asking whether he has the power to do so.
The U.S. Court of International Trade heard a challenge Wednesday to Trump's tariffs on goods from 60 trading partners, including Canada, which he accuses of failing to prevent imports made with forced labour.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer says, “The United States prohibits the import of goods with forced labor. Most countries in the world do not, and those who have a prohibition don't really enforce it. So, we're not going to tolerate that anymore.”
Canada is on the receiving end of the tariffs, but the businesses that launched the lawsuit do not purchase goods from Canada.
