I'd like to clear up a misconception: there is no fourth dimension.
As a matter of fact, there is no third dimension, either.
Now, by that I don't mean that there aren't three dimensions… there are, but we just can't tell these dimensions apart: there's no special direction you can call "the 1st dimension," so it doesn't make sense to say "this is the 2nd one," or "what's the fourth one?"
It's like if you have a jug with three cups of water in it... it's easy to tell that there ARE three cups of water, but which is the first cup? the second? Or the third?
Those questions don't even make sense!
That said, there may be different KINDS of dimensions that you CAN tell apart - like if you poured three cups of water and one cup of oil into our jug.
Then you could say "I have three dimensions that behave in the same way, and one that behaves a different way."
And that's what we mean when we say that we live in three spatial dimensions and one time dimension.
And there's nothing crazy about adding another cup of water so that you'd have four watery cups and one oily cup; likewise we can contemplate what the universe would be like if there were FOUR spatial dimensions and one time dimension… or in the case of string theory, nine spatial dimensions and one time dimension.

This is every drunk college guy in a bar.
This reminded me of when code parade made his 4d golf game, and in his video explicitly explained that this was four spacial dimensions and he wasn't considering time "the 4th dimension", but there were still people in the comments trying to insist that the fourth (spatial) dimension in his game represented time
Just curious is it possible to have more time dimensions since in your example you only used 1 temporal dimension
I didnt think this was a misconception anyone had. I've always thought of it as one more independent direction in addition to the three we're used to
As a quick linguistic shortcut: you can just say a “a fourth dimension” rather than “the fourth dimension”. (English is strange in that regard, plenty of languages don’t distinguish those two cases!)
“There’s no objective first dimension” is a fundamentally different argument than “you cannot enumerate three dimensions” and this video is a bit sloppy about implying the later
I like the idea that you think you cleared that up.
Well, it's just a matter of naming. We also have first newton law, second one and third one but that doesn't mean that they don't work at the same time
Two spatial dimensions, two time dimensions gotta be some crazy
"FOUR dimensions? I can't picture that! You're dumb!" - Futurama
But did you pour the 4th cup of water orthogonal to the first 3 cups?
Nice video!! Thanks! Make a lot of sense!!
35 years old and it finally clicks. Thanks
Oh it's easy, the first cup is the first one that got poured in the jug :3
Glad we cleared that up indeed
As far as I understand the only plausible theories for a 4th dimension are that everything in that higher space is either so sparce that it is statistically impossible anything there will ever interact with our 3D "slice" of the universe or that everything in the 4th dimension is tied to the particles we perceive. Moreover, if anything were to move to or from a higher dimensional space, it would appear to us as a violation of the conservation of energy.
You know your theory is valid when it takes an extra 25 imaginary dimensions for it to work. "I'm not wrong, you're just dimensionally challenged"
Dimensions may also be relative , a person staring at a wall will think it exists in 2d as it has only length and width , but only if HE MOVES IN 3D TO GO AROUND then he will se the 3rd dimension , maybe we are also like that man , we just can't move in 4d to experience it

What if there are pi dimensions (3,1415... +1)? Maybe the universe would curve back on itself. So if you travel in a straight line for a long time, you would end up in the same place you started.
