Minute Physics provides an energetic and entertaining view of old and new problems in physics -- all in a minute!

why do you want me so far away from your cat bro i just wanted to pet it 😭
why should i walk 10.000 km away from a cat????
But I would walk ten thousand ks And I would walk ten thousand more Just to be twelve thousand seven hundred fifty ks Away from your cat
Having spent the better part of a decade working with GIS systems, I wish the Earth was flat. There's nothing worse than realizing 2 months into a project that someone picked the wrong planar projection for design and now every plan that's above a specific latitude has a -2ft drift when measuring horizontally.
If u'r on the peak of mount chimborazo you can be 12,762.5 km away from someone in Indonesia. Doesn't get wider than that tho
What if I'm on Mt.Everest, then I'm 12750+8.8km from some guy off the coast of chili in the Pacific ocean
So you're saying I'm at most 12,750km away from being able to pet your cat 🤔
Ok, but if you walk 10 000 km away from your cat, youre not really 10 000 km away from your cat, because there you took into consideration the curvature of earth.
Depends on what you define as "distance" like we cant go through the earth to get to your cat but that not being the point, respect lol
The most trivial fact from minute physics
And that's how the meter was defined. 1 / 10,000,000 of the distance from the equator to the North Pole in 1790's
Except perhaps on the top of Everest.
You have well explained it in Special theory of relativity chapter.
Another cool feature of the spherical-ness are directions. For example: Norway is not to the east of Canada. It’s actually in the north of Canada. Lol
Well I could walk ten thousand kilometers And I could walk ten thousand more But then I'd be twelve thousand kilometers Away from the cat that I adore
Follow up question: what are the two specific points furthest apart on earth? Like someone pointed out the furthest from the center of the earth is some mountain in Ecuador, but if on the other side is a deep sea trench it cancels out. I'm thinking of the set of antipodes whoes sum of distance to the center of the earth is maximised.
we are still 20,000km away by travel distance though
I know the Earth has some variance in its diameter based on the slight squash at the equator, but also with mountains and stuff. So I wonder what two points on the actual Earth would be the absolute farthest from eachother taking all these factors into account?
They belong to different categories: a practical/epistemic limitation (distance/horizon) versus an intrinsic geometric property (curvature/flatness). Conflating them risks mistaking observational limits for ontological claims (e.g., “we see flat locally, so space is flat everywhere”).
I want you to introduce us to your cat.
