A Palestinian doctor who spent decades treating the poor for free was released from an Israeli prison with visible injuries, after spending more than four months behind bars without charge. 71 year old Dr Mazen al-Rantisi was arrested at his home in the occupied West Bank in June. Upon his release, he reported beatings, torture, denial of medical care, and harsh prison conditions.

Every hour, our landlord knocks, demanding rent and threatening to throw us out onto the street if we do not pay. O people with compassionate hearts—I swear by the One who raised the heavens and spread out the earth—there is not even a single day’s worth of food in our home; we are suffering immensely, relying only on the occasional help of neighbors. You who love your own sons and daughters—please know that we, too, are someone’s daughters, and we, are suffering in agony, yet no one looks upon us with a merciful eye....
