Scorecard

Harry Brook's first double century by an England batter in a one-day international was not enough to prevent his team being stunned by Sri Lanka, who pulled off a remarkable chase of 430 in Rawalpindi.

Brook passed Ben Stokes' previous England best score of 182 and posted the fastest ODI double hundred, off 114 balls, in his astonishing 202.

In clobbering the 14th double-hundred in a men's one-day international and the 12th highest individual score, Brook lifted England to 429-4 – at halfway the highest total made in a one-day international in Pakistan.

But Sri Lanka, who chose to bat second, were not deterred, even when they were reduced to 24-2. They set about completing the second-highest successful chase in ODI history.

Pavan Rathnayake made a sublime 130, while Aviksha Fernando and Dasun Shanaka both added 97.

With Jofra Archer rested for the tri-series and leg-spinner Adil Rashid left out of this match for tactical reasons, England's bowling was woeful. Sam Curran conceded 103 runs from his nine overs.

Up with the required rate throughout their innings, Sri Lanka needed 109 from the final 10 overs and were able to absorb the losses of Rathnayake and Shanaka.

Sri Lanka needed eight off the final over, sent down by Josh Tongue, who was pinpoint with his accuracy to bowl Dinuth Wellalage and Eshan Malinga with successive deliveries.

But in a sensational finish, Janith Liyanage, the man bowling when Brook reached 200, would not be denied.

With six needed from two balls, Liyanage pummelled Tongue's penultimate delivery of the match down the ground for a match-winning maximum, sparking joyous Sri Lankan celebrations.

One of the most incredible one-day internationals ever played ended with an aggregate of 859 runs, behind only a match total of 872 when South Africa chased 435 to beat Australia in 2006.

The total of 123 boundaries across both innings - 93 fours and 30 sixes - is also a record in ODIs.

How did England lose this game? At halfway, when Brook left the field arm-in-arm with Will Jacks, the thought of Sri Lanka even getting close to their target seemed highly fanciful.

Yet, Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis' decision to chase proved inspired, despite the way his team were dismantled by Brook.

Ultimately, Sri Lanka put the conditions – and Brook's knock – into context, helped by an England team who wilted under the pressure.

They were hampered by the dew, another factor in Sri Lanka's decision to bat second. England made mistakes in the field and their bowlers struggled to grip the ball. Without Archer, they lacked a death bowler.

And, with less then a year to go until the World Cup, England showed no composure as the game began to run away from them.

For as well as Brook batted, his tactics will come into question. Too much faith was placed in Curran, whose 103-2 are the most expensive figures returned by an England bowler in an ODI.

Gus Atkinson opened the bowling and sent down just seven overs of his allotted 10 and Tongue, who almost rescued the game, was only into his ninth.

This tri-series is designed to replicate the tournament conditions England will face at the World Cup in southern Africa. Two games in they are without a win and facing the prospect of needing to beat Pakistan in Lahore on Sunday to stay in the competition.

Brook has become the first man in ODI history to make a double hundred and end up on the losing side.

His strokeplay was irresistible. In a 116-ball stay, he mixed innovation with brutal power and deft touches. He scored all around the ground, clearing the ropes for 10 sixes and adding 21 fours.

A feature of Brook's knock was his measured acceleration. The 27-year-old had only 13 runs from the first 24 deliveries he faced, then upped the pace to reach 50 from 42 balls. His century, his fourth in ODIs, was completed in 75 balls.

It was upon reaching three figures that Brook really cut loose. He went from 100 to 200 in only 39 balls.

As England added 156 in the final 10 overs, Brook passed Stokes' record with a six whipped over the leg side off a full toss bowled by left-arm seamer Dilshan Madushanka.

Whether he was aware of the milestone or not, Brook did not acknowledge his achievement and, in the same over, was dropped at mid-off on 185.

Brook began the final over, delivered by seamer Liyanage, on 186. He clobbered the first ball over the covers for six, then scampered back for two unlikely twos.

Fittingly, the double hundred was reached with a paddled-sweep, then he was caught at third man off the final ball of the innings.

Somehow, it was not enough. Liyanage had the final say.
