AI data centers are driving unprecedented demand for electricity and putting renewed pressure on America’s power grid to modernize its equipment and develop greener, more efficient sources of power. Google, Meta, Microsoft and Amazon are all spending millions of dollars on local infrastructure upgrades and companies like SpaceXAI are even building off-grid power plants to power their data centers.
Google says its planned 780-megawatt data center in Pine Island, Minnesota, could offer a model for powering the AI boom. In a proposed agreement with Xcel Energy, Google says it will support 1,900 megawatts of new wind, solar and battery capacity, while minimum payments and exit fees are intended to protect local ratepayers if demand falls short.
CNBC examines whether projects like Pine Island can make the grid cleaner without shifting costs to existing customers, why some energy experts argue that smaller data centers could make better use of infrastructure already in place, and how utilities’ financial incentives can complicate efforts to build less.

The Race To Power AI Is Reshaping America's Electric Grid
It's simple. Offer the residents to lock in the current rate for 10 years
Sounds like the power companies have been asleep at the wheel. They are probably wait for the government to flip the bill for the upgrades.
No Data centers No AI Centers! Humanity and Humans First!
here in MN :O
Is it good for me? That was a powerful statement
it seems to me that North Dakota with its extremely cold winters would be the place to build these data centers.
Zillow will need to add Nearby Data Center or future Data Center to their real estate summary page
Chief please don’t forget my ants our ants, just tap the ants as a computer resources…
👍🙏@CNBC
Legalize plug-in solar 🔌 so we can make our own electricity 👍
Everything was planned out , at a high level, even 50 years ago.
I really hope that overflowing data centers build out could be done proper way (if the need is so high). Use renewable resources, support locals that are being impacted, provide jobs,...
8:40 I love how this woman is very vague.
Nuclear energy is the only way for this to work.
If any of these tech companies is making promises to local residents, get it in writing in a binding contract. And make sure there are harsh penalties if the company fails to deliver. That’s when you know if they mean what they say.
Good documentary but it seems that everyone is just talking how good it is and its sounds to good to be true
How much water and diesel for your backup generators are required?
Literally says in the video that the bills will increase XD. If the residents were smart they'd negotiate that their power bill would be covered entirely by the data center as a thank you for letting them build in their backyard. Especially since the amount of homes in the area is a small fraction of the electricity that the data center uses
please make AI so expensive comapanies return to employees!!
If the idea of space data center can fly , why they had to build it close to homes ?
