U.S. chip manufacturing faces a shortage of up to 157,000 skilled workers by 2030, a matter of concern for companies like Samsung.
Schools including Purdue and Arizona State have new semiconductor degree programs, and all the biggest chipmakers are investing millions to create pipelines of U.S. chip talent.
CNBC's Katie Tarasov has the details. Watch the related video for full report.
20 years ago I worked for TDK. Production lines went from 16 people to 1 due to automated systems.
The same companies humble brag about their rejection rates for internships and jobs as well…
I wanna fill an opening
semiconductor manufacturing needs more than AI researchers, including process engineers, equipment specialists and technicians..scaling workforce training alongside fab construction is critical
Intel in the 90s was ramping up hiring and training people like crazy. It worked. Companies can do now that though even at bigger scale.
What about scholarships for those degrees?
If they need "a few hundred every year" then it's really not worth telling too many kids to go into the field.
Isn’t enough? How much are those chips burned out and getting replaced?
There is plenty of talent available. Both from the military and from colleges/universities. The industry always cries about shortages so it can get cheap labor from overseas, i saw it for 20 years at Intel. There is PLENTY of talent but these companies keep trying to hold down pay and fill jobs with temp agencies rather than hiring full time employee's to hold down costs but those temp agencies DO NOT PAY WELL, they never have. You reap what you sow, stop being stingy when there is plenty of money to go around, stop trying to maximize profits at workers expense.
His words "every year, for several years". Several years isn't a career
Well, these companies can have an employment contract to hire those graduates, I am pretty sure kids would swarm into those programs in no time
Cool
This entire industry will be automated in the future.
When they are going to be dark factories and with humanoid invasion how did you calculate shortage
Sehat selalu bapak helmi yahya
Training?!
I’ve heard this story before lol
Tech companies don’t train. If they did we would know how to make chips too.
They'll be replaced by robots.
I'll defer to Physicist, Michio Kaku on the subject. I'm GenX and retired. Don't look at me; I took Chemistry, Physics, Algebra and Trigonometry in high school.
