New Jersey teen earns rare ROTC award after rescuing two crash victims with parents

Haddad’s rescue earned him a rare national honour, marking a historic first for New Jersey’s ROTC programme.

Heroism sometimes begins with a simple decision: to stop when others might keep moving. For Joshua Haddad, a New Jersey teenager returning home from church with his family, that moment came beside a wrecked vehicle on a South Jersey road.

Two people were trapped inside, and Haddad, alongside his parents, stepped in to help bring them to safety. Months later, the decision has earned him one of the rarest distinctions in the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC), making him the first recipient of its Gold Valor Award in New Jersey.

A roadside rescue that changed everything

According to Hoodline and 6 ABC Action News, the incident occurred in May 2026 near the intersection of Kings Highway and Auburn Road.

Haddad, who lived in Pilesgrove, was then a cadet lieutenant colonel preparing to graduate from Salem County Vocational Technical High School. When the family came upon the crash, two occupants remained trapped inside the vehicle. Haddad and his parents rushed to help, working together to pull the victims free. The rescue would soon draw attention beyond the immediate roadside emergency. The AFJROTC Gold Valor Award was proposed for Haddad after the incident.

An honour reserved for extraordinary courage

The Gold Valor Award represents the highest decoration available to an AFJROTC cadet. As reported by Hoodline and 6 ABC Action News, it is reserved for individuals who voluntarily accept life-threatening risks to save others.Salem County Vocational Technical School, as reported by Hoodline, confirmed that Haddad is the first person in New Jersey to receive the award. He is also reportedly only the sixth cadet nationwide to earn the honour over the past decade, underlining the extraordinary nature of the recognition.Unlike routine awards marking achievement or completion of the cadet programme, the Gold Valor Award requires a rigorous review. Haddad's nomination underwent a thorough investigation before receiving endorsement and final approval from AFJROTC headquarters.

From cadet leadership to a lasting legacy

The recognition also highlights the broader values promoted by the Junior ROTC programme. Its objectives include developing citizenship, responsibility, self-discipline, character and community service, alongside an introduction to air and space fundamentals, according to information cited by Hoodline.Haddad's actions offered a powerful real-world example of those values, demonstrating how individual initiative and a willingness to help can make a difference in an emergency, states 6 ABC Action News report. His rescue was not presented as part of a formal emergency-response assignment. Instead, it was a spontaneous decision made in a moment of uncertainty, with his parents supporting the effort to reach the trapped occupants.

A milestone for Salem Tech

Salem County Vocational Technical School announced that Haddad would receive the award at a formal campus ceremony on Friday, October 23, 2026, according to Hoodline. By then, he had graduated from the school where he had served as an AFJROTC cadet. For Haddad, the honour marks recognition of a single defining moment. For Salem Tech and New Jersey, it represents a historic first within the national cadet programme, claims 6 ABC Action News report. The distinction ultimately celebrates more than a rescue. It recognises the courage to act when help is needed most, and the difference one person and a family willing to step forward can make when lives are at stake.Images Courtesy: Facebook and istock
