When Siddharth Vikram watched his older brother go through long physical therapy sessions after a serious car accident, he noticed a major problem with the recovery process. While clinic visits offered expert help, doing the same exercises at home often left patients feeling bored and unmotivated.

Wanting to help, the eighth grader from Carlisle, Massachusetts, used his family's experience to create a new solution. He developed ReHappy, an interactive app that turns repeated physical therapy exercises into fun, game-based challenges for children and teenagers recovering from injuries. His invention earned him national recognition and the $25,000 grand prize in the grades 5 to 8 business category of the Mott Million Dollar Challenge.

The nationwide competition, funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, encourages young people across the United States to share business ideas that solve everyday problems.

Turning personal hardship into innovation

The idea for ReHappy came from watching his brother's long recovery and understanding what he was going through. Siddharth saw that while medical professionals provide excellent care, young patients often struggle to keep up with their exercises at home.

"He did it with such vigor that I was definitely convinced that those were the most effective ways to do therapy," Siddharth said in an official Q&A published by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, describing the care his brother received.

"And then when I thought about accessibility, a lot of people can't go to the in-person centers. They're doing it at home on their computers. There's nothing fun." ReHappy aims to solve this problem by turning physical therapy exercises into game levels.

Rather than simply checking off completed exercises, the app turns body movements into games. It gives young users quick feedback and encouragement as they work through their recovery plans at home.

Perseverance through previous setbacks

Winning the national prize did not happen overnight for the young inventor. Siddharth had entered other competitions with early versions of his software. He faced rejection at first, but used those experiences to improve his presentation for the Mott Million Dollar Challenge.

"No, I've gone through many pitch competitions for other ideas and for ReHappy itself," Siddharth explained in his interview with the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation when asked if this was his first pitch.

"I submitted a video for ReHappy to another competition. It didn't get selected, but it did provide me with valuable insight on how I should craft my video, which really helped me with the Mott Challenge." When the competition judges asked him which key qualities had helped him as an entrepreneur, Siddharth pointed to empathy, grit and growth.

His hard work paid off when his family received the official results. "I remember one thing: I was jumping with joy," Siddharth recalled in the foundation feature. "I got the notification and I just ran down and immediately told my dad, and he was also so happy, and we just started instantly formulating a plan for the next steps forward. I was like, 'Wow! These people actually believe in my idea. They're giving me a chance to prove its worth.'

It was just really amazing for me."

Next steps for the rehabilitation app

The $25,000 prize will help Siddharth continue developing ReHappy. He is also seeking technical advice and support to bring the project closer to being used in clinical care. "ReHappy can definitely go places, and I'm very excited to pursue them," Siddharth told the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. "I've contacted some people that could really help me work on my idea, give me advice and the help I would need to pursue it.

I'm definitely excited for this journey to continue." Siddharth plans to work with healthcare advisers and software developers to improve the app's ability to track body movements. These improvements will help ensure that the platform is safe, accurate and engaging for young patients as they recover from injuries.
