Sony really made an official Linux kit for the PlayStation 2, and somehow we got our hands on one 24 years later. The only problem is we’re missing some pretty important hardware, the discs are in Japanese, and getting this thing running is anything but straightforward. So naturally, we’re going to try anyway and see what Linux on a PS2 was actually like in 2002.

Thanks to @CosmicScale on X for pointing us to the PSBBN-Definitive-Project on GitHub which looks like a great way to run Linux on PS2 in 2026, which will be easier than using retail discs on one specific unmodified Japanese PS2 and period-appropriate hardware like we set out to do in this video. Your experience may vary, though. Like, you may be able to bypass the apparent hard drive limitations with a SATA adapter upgrade and standard SATA hard drives. Pro tip: When booting PS2Linux you may be able to force NTSC or PAL display modes by holding Select+R1 or Select+R2, respectively! At least it came with a disc.
Riley out here making his actor reel on company time. Smart cookie
"24 years ago, when the year of the Linux desktop was just around the corner" That hurt in many ways
Fun fact: I live near the air force base that operated the PS3 super computer cluster. When it was put together, it was the 33rd largest super computer in the world, and it cost just 1/10th of what it would have cost to build a traditional super computer. It was used to analyze high definition satellite imagery. There are rumours among the other IT people I work with, that as recently as 8 years ago I think, they still had some of them running, mostly just as a cool bit of computing history.
2000s: running pc software on playstation 2026: running ps5 software on windows
If I remember correctly, when 80 000 PS3s joined the 2 000 000 PCs lending computing power to Stanford's Folding at Home project, they doubled the amount of work being done.
Riley is in the process of creating his own cinematic universe and I'm all for it.
0:12 "24 years ago when the year of the Linux Desktop was juuuuust around the corner" 😂
Three things from someone that owns the kit a) You can bypass the sync on green requirement by holding the following during boot: VGA Mode: Select + L1. NTSC Mode (TV): Select + R1. PAL Mode (TV): Select + R2 b) there was a list online somewhere of compatible unofficial drives. Maxtor's seemed to be the brand on the list the most. c) some the written games from the community were distributed as real discs but only as part of the PS2 magazine demo discs.
My university had two of these and the final year project for our team was a 3d scrolling shooter with spherical harmonic lighting. In the video you missed probably the best part, the Linux kit came with pdf copies of the exquisite hardware manuals for the main cpu, vector units, graphics chip, dma, etc. Only the io processor (basically a PS1) was held back behind Linux APIs. The PS2 was one the last console where where developers had full hardware documentation and control.
These sponsor actors deserve a part in Hollywood .
Sony was probably proud people were using their consoles for supercomputer clusters until they realized they were probably taking a loss on all that.
That PS2 startup sound made me feel something.
2:40 The Net Yaroze dev system wasn't just a kit for the PS1, it was a different revision entirely with more RAM.
You either die a hero or live long enough to become a villain... Oh how far you've fallen Sony
17:30 I want the whole film with riley
Also, sponsor segment needs an award for acting talent.
Riley is way too good at what he does!!
my finger was on right arrow after seguey, but when I've seen Riley I just let it happen. good job
