Kaleidescape isn't your average media viewing service. They offer a home theater experience with bitrates that completely destroy standard streaming and even 4K Blu-ray. But with proprietary players, massive file sizes, and individual titles costing up to $45 each, we have to ask: who is this for?

Its always cute when linus pretends hes not a millionaire
So this is the type of millionaire content I could get behind.. Do more of these. I love to see examples of the way that the oligarchs are living high and mighty and enjoying things us poorrs could never imagine.
The blue with white text looks like they haven't updated the UI since the early days of cable boxes when that was the standard design.
The reason it doesn't come with a remote is because it's meant to be integrated with an AV control system like Control4, RTI, Crestron, etc.
Oh boy I can't wait to see all these ultra high quality films through YouTube compression!
The real reason a remote is not included is because the majority of customers do not need it. 9 times out of 10, the customer hires someone to integrate their Kaleidescape with a home control system (Control4, Savant, Crestron, RTI, etc.). Those systems have their own remotes already.
Linus, aren't you one of these millionaires?
Love how Ugreen, with their NAS, is the sponsor on this xD.
5:17 Brother, you do not get to both buy a jet and make sarcastic yacht jokes 😂
I used to work on some of the most advanced Kaleidescape systems available. I am the network engineer who discovered in the early days that it was best to isolate the Kscape network in a VLAN because there was an issue with Lutron and Kscape causing packet storms. Shoutout to Rusty. RIP, Brother
He isn’t wrong about the Yacht. I spent the best part of 10 years working on some of the biggest yachts in the world. Most had transitioned to kaleidescape by the time I left. On most we had access to it on our terrible cabin TVs, with a full access library which was great. Mind you that was more than 10 years ago - and the UI was still the same! It also crashed more than Bitcoin….
I used to work on some of the most advanced Kaleidescape systems around. I am actually the network engineer that in the early days discovered it was best to isolate the Kscape network in a VLAN because there used to be an issue back in the day with Lutron and Kscape causing packet storms. Shout out to Rusty. RIP Brother.
For anyone wondering how much the Bel Air Cinema service actually costs to watch theatrical releases at home on day one: Expect $100k to $200k+ just for required DCI-compliant gear (Barco/Christie cinema-grade projectors and secure servers), $15k to $50k/year in membership fees, and anywhere from $1,000 to $8,000 per movie for a 24–48h window
I have a friend who actually has the Ultimate 4K setup. The audio and picture experience is absolutely awesome, but like Linus said, the user interface genuinely feels like you're using a 2010 Android phone. For that kind of money, the clunky UI is just wild.
Pretty fair look. A couple notes. I've been a Kaleidescape user for 5 years, I've never bought a film on the device itself. That's what the app and website are for. And I appreciate that they don't include a remote in the box - 99% of their user base is using a universal smart remote or a full control system, and this just means less plastic in a drawer somewhere, and eventually in the ground. Plus - like you mentioned - most of these are being sold by dealers, who will generally throw in a free remote if you ask. Finally, you can't compare early access pre-release pricing with a disc that isn't available yet. Those $45 prices come down when the film is out of theaters and at available digitally, and then again months later when the disc is in stores. You're paying more for early access pricing.

13:00 On what James said here about watching the first Pirates of the Caribbean in 4k Cinematic, it is likely that what they watched was a higher bitrate version of the 2022 4K Blu-ray remaster which is infamous for it's poor image quality; the film grain was digitally removed and bunch of sharpening and digital manipulation was applied. The standard Blu-Ray from 2007 is a great master with none of these problems, I picked it up in a thrift store for two dollars.
Spending 40,000 dollars just to have basic glitches is insane
