What we know about human history is only a fraction of the full story. Much of the rest is like dark matter, invisible to us. We can’t see it, and we can only see the effects of its presence. But thanks to new techniques for DNA sequencing, dating ancient detritus, mathematical models, and aerial and lidar archaeology, we are now able to get a faint idea of what this world might have looked and felt like.
Who was the first human? Where did the first civilization begin and what did life look like back then?

The 12,027 Human Era Calendar is officially out now on the kurzgesagt shop: https://shop.kgs.link/12027 🎉 This is the release we look forward to the most each year: it follows many months of careful work, and we’re so happy to finally share it with you all. It’s packed with stunning artwork, hand-drawn by our team, and it’s one of the best ways to support our independent studio. Thanks so much for being a special part of this yearly tradition!
Watching our beginnings after watching the AI video about our end is a wild few days
“To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness."
Cracked a cold one to honor Kushim 🍺
Feels like I'm learning about a family I've never known, I love them and I miss them. I hope future humans will love and miss me too.
The most humbling thing about the first civilization isn’t how old it is. It’s that it already felt like the end of something older
I wish we could travel in time, as an observer, just to witness all that happened in the past.
The detail about burying loved ones beneath their own homes and later decorating their skulls really stuck with me. It’s a reminder that even thousands of years before written history, people were finding deeply human ways to remember the dead and keep them close. How many other things about their lives have we misunderstood simply because they left no written record?
It is so clear that Göbekli Tepe is not one of the first human settlements!, It's so complex and advanced that it needs to have a lot of previous iterations.
It would be interesting to see a video on Indigenous Australians. They’ve been in Australia for at least 50,000 to 60,000 years, and their oral story telling is so strict that they have accurate oral records of extinct megafauna and rising sea levels.
The epic of Gilgamesh is set in Uruk aswell. It’s the oldest story known to us.
12,000 years of civilization and we still haven't figured out how to get along with our neighbors.
Something primal awakened within me when you said "Copper" and "Uruk" *Udre eeeeeaaaaa*
15:05 Kushim would’ve never known that he alone would end up being one of the oldest named people, he was probably just a regular person back then yet his name has survived well past his culture, pretty poetic
7:19 Socializing with your neighbors through wooden ladders & holes in the roofs sounds really fun
I cried at the end there. Knowing the first written name. How incredibly humbling and uniting it is. Wow!
“The most terrifying thing about history isn’t what we know. It’s how much we’ll never know"
i have been to karahan tepe last year. It is amazing to think all those things still stand after 12000 years. anatolia is truly mesmerizing
11:16 “A dam of ice in a warming world” *”Oh well.”*
16:15 Pulling the "It's not X, it's Y" right before talking about AI slop is pure genius writing
