Back in 1990 I did a paper about this for my college chemistry class. I was literally drinking a diet Mt Dew in class and saw the warning on the can and wondered what it was about. Needing a topic for my paper I went to the library and researched it and got lucky. My professor commended my unique topic.

My cousin has PKU. He was part of a major clinical trial of a new drug that allows the metabolism of phenylalanine. He was the biggest success story of the trial. He is effectively cured, and will receive the drug for life. He can eat anything he wants now, he feels better, he's sharper. He's still my dumb cousin but I'm glad he's healthier.
I worked in a state run institution in the 1980's and took care of 2 patients who were unfortunately born before the state required mandatory testing at birth. Because they were undiagnosed, they were exposed to a normal diet with no restrictions and as a result became profoundly developmentally disabled. It's good that they started the newborn testing as It ultimately has saved many from the devastating effects of untreated PKU and enabled so many to live normal or near normal lives.

For anyone wondering, the amount of methanol you would get from a can of diet soda is roughly 6 times less than that of a glass of tomato juice. Small amounts of dietary methanol are processed by your body without issue.
