In my latest video I tried to guess what these ancient medical devices actually did... blindfolded. How'd I do? https://go.doctormikemedia.com/youtube/AncientMedicalDevices
This entire comment section is “wow Dr Mike you are so empathetic, please change your smoke alarm batteries”
Hey Doc, change the battery in ur smoke alarm
As a cognitive behavioral therapist, this was on the one hand extremely frustrating to watch because these people aren't getting the evidence based treatment they need (for example, for OCD) and on the other hand, I am so greatful we have medical professionals like yourself who are calling out the BS as soon as you see it! Thank you Dr. Mike.
i like the explanation of the difference between "compulsion" and "addiction."
I'm addicted to eating Dr. Mike's smoke alarm batteries
My addiction was weird. I didn't binge during the day. I ate normally, healthy even. But at night, something switched. I'd wake up at 2 AM and raid the fridge. I'd eat in a trance, barely tasting the food, then go back to bed feeling sick and ashamed. I did this for years. I told myself I was just hungry, but I wasn't. It was something else. It was boredom. It was loneliness. It was a way to fill the silence. I tried everything. I'd lock the kitchen, put notes on the fridge, drink water, do breathing exercises. Nothing worked. I was almost quitting every single night. "Tomorrow I won't do it." But tomorrow never came. A friend in an online support group mentioned The Ritual of Almost Quitting by Vaelen Morcant. She said it helped her understand why she kept relapsing with alcohol, but she thought it applied to any compulsive behavior. I was desperate so I read it. Morcant talks about how the "almost" is a way of staying stuck. You keep one foot in the addiction and one foot in recovery, and you never have to fully commit to either. That's exactly what I was doing. I was almost sleeping through the night. I was almost not eating. But I never actually stopped. The book helped me see that my night eating wasn't about hunger. It was about comfort. It was about control. It was about filling a void that food could never actually fill. I'm 7 months into recovery now. I still wake up sometimes, but I don't eat. I journal instead. I breathe. I sit with whatever I'm feeling. It's hard but it's working. This book gave me the tools to understand myself. If you're stuck in a similar cycle, please read it. It's worth it.
his ability to not judge the lady smelling her father's underwear.... I can't believe. I strive to be that non-judgemental.
Mike replace your damn smoke alarm batteries
Mike should get addicted to changing his smoke alarm batteries
All the comments just putting Dr. Mike on blast for his smoke alarm 😂
Don't let Fire Department Chronicles know Dr. Mike hasn't changed his smoke alarm batteries
Thank you for explaining the difference between “addiction” and “compulsion”. It is a very important distinction, especially for those in these reality shows that feel like they are strange.
Love how Dr. Mike is so empathetic and not judging these people
"If we're empathetic, we can learn, we can improve, we can do better". Wise words, Dr. Mike! ❤
Seeing the dad leave his daughter crying on the porch is heartbreaking. Of course he doesn’t understand, she doesn’t understand either, and they should have given her more tools BEFORE forcing that conversation, IF it ever needed to happen at all!
I am a psychotherapist who works with eating disorders. I SOOOOO appreciate how you were approaching these treatments when you were discussing the mental health side of them ( saw the same things you did!). Thank you for supporting mental health care and treatment, we need more MD's like you in this world. Keep spreading the message!
Dad needs to lock his "drawers,"
10:15 Exactly. Whoever diagnosed her problem should have explained that to the father...but then I guess they didn't have real doctors.
I won’t judge a single person in this video, except for Mike until he changes his batteries
