It's been 20 years since the first promising prototype of an invisibility cloak. We're still pretty far from having the cloaking devices of sci-fi dreams, but some engineers think the principles of invisibility could be used to shield entire cities from earthquakes.

11:45 This seems like yet another good reason to advocate for preserving and restoring biodiverse forests, and creating garden cities with lots of trees.
Soooo... we'll get city walls back? Well, inverted into the ground and warding against earthquakes instead of invaders, but I'd take it!
I remember reading articles about this 20 years ago at the college library. I've wondered on and off over the years how that was going
so they are basically wavebreakers but for a different wavelength and more specific in not just breaking but also recombining the wave... alright :D
This sounds like the simplest solution is just to surround cities with a forest ring 😂😂😂 And idk seems pretty awesome. It's good for the environment, we all get nearby places to do trail/outdoor activities, meanwhile the primary goal is minimizing earthquakes.
Forests protect us from Earthquakes! Deforestation looks even more stupid now.
The most fundamental problem with a general optical invisibility cloak using wave diversion is that those inside the cloak will not be able to see outside it!
very off topic but I would love to see a tinted glasses themed video narrated by Savannah, I love theirs!! I have very bad migraines and have seen people talking about how tinted glasses can help, but I don't really know why or how.
Wow, this kind of research is... making waves.
That was freaking fascinating! Great video! :)
9:20 *damper
If you were in a true cloaking device? Would you be able to see if all light is diverted around you. Putting you in a black hole of no light.
9:40 You should of used wave breakers like they use at the ocean beaches for a better visual analogy : )
This to me sounds like noise how noise canceling works and headphones but just with visual waves.
Oh my goodness the popsci coverage back then were wild
Great video!
Hopefully the waves don't dissipate into the planet and cause a massive, previously unknown side-effect
The borehole concept reminds me of the use of wooden piles to protect shorelines or riverbanks from erosion. Intersting...
Thank you so much all you Presidents of Science!
