List income and fixed costs first
Start with what is certain: monthly income, rent or mortgage, utilities, transport, debt payments. Subtract them to see what is actually available for everything else.
Set limits for a few flexible categories
Group the rest into a handful of categories such as food, transport, leisure and savings, and give each a limit. Fewer categories are easier to keep up than a long list.
Log expenses the day they happen
Recording spending daily takes under a minute and avoids the month-end guessing that makes budgets fall apart. Small purchases are usually where the surprises are.
Review at month end and adjust
Compare each category's limit with what you spent, then change next month's limits based on reality rather than intention. Your second budget will be much more accurate than your first.
